And now for a holiday...

Got home from the trip and pushed through with twisted ankle and all. Must admit, I haven't done much but eat, drink and shop for Christmas.

I did get a 17 miler in last Saturday. Ouch! That hurt! I knew it was going to hurt simply because I had only done 13-14 miler in Saipan. So to jump to mile 18 was asking a lot! My IT Bands certainly "crapped" out on me and I walked the last mile to prevent myself from getting hurt. I felt ok the next day. And even could do my offseason train with 20 Lb weights-no prob.

This weekend I'll do 12 miles, but I'm starting to become a weekend warrior and that scares me.

Need to get back on schedule next week. It might be easy since I can "work from home". So, here is my plan:

Mon-run (Christmas)
Tues- Spin
Wed-swim/run
Thur-run/spin
Fri-Yoga
Sat-18 miler/yoga
Sun-ride/run

I'm taking Reliv and it's supposed to help my migraines and my appetite. So, continue to eat right... no more rich foods (dear god!)

I miss my vacations and ability to put more workouts in!

Home Again!

Just got back into town this morning and after the LONG flight... I'm exhausted. The rest of the trip rocked!

Monday 11/27: I was pretty lazy! No core workout, no swim, but lots of R&R. That night we went on a Sunset Cruise where Mike and I were told by the entertainment that for the night we were "honeymooners". I guess that serves us right for going on a sunset cruise. Anyway, later that night (and after the Buoy Bar) I came down with food poisoning. It was a bad scene for me (Mike just slept on through it all).

Tuesday 11/28: NOTHING but sleep! I think I slept 20 hours in the 24 hour period. Managed to get down bread and water, but couldn't even get out of bed without wiping out my energy.

Wednesday 11/29: After Tuesday, I took it easy. I was holding down food more easily and even managed to take a sailing lesson. At the end of the day, no workouts... but I was impressed that I got some Chinese food in later that night with Russ, Kanae, Angela, Bill, their kids and Mike.

Thursday 11/30: Starting to feel better. Helped Mike with his swimming lesson and did our Core workout.

Friday 12/1: Headed out for Scuba Diving with Russ. Enjoyed some R&R, then went out for one last formal dinner with Russ and Kanae at Seaside grill. Wound up at the Buoy Bar for drinks.

Saturday 12/2: Up early for the "Tank to Tank Duathlon". Awesome race! We swam around the two WWII tanks in the ocean, then transitioned for our run to the Japanese WWII tank on Beach Street. I finished in 55 minutes (couldn't catch the girl in front of me to save my life!). After that, we headed off to a quick breakfast and change of clothes... and went ATV'ing. That was great! Russ's friend gave us a guided tour of the island and even included a stop at a local farmer's lot... after getting attacked by turkeys, and enjoying some fresh coconut juice we moved on. Next on the list, Go Cart racing. Russ easily took first, me second, Kanae third and "Grandpa" Mike took the scenic route. Back to PIC to eat, change, pack and move onto the Hash Harrier's Run.

Wow! The Hash run actually takes more details: We met at the First Bank of Guam parking lot and had about 50 people. Then we were told to head down to Tank Beach. From there after ceremony, etc we headed off after the hares... we ran down to the beach, into the water and "swam/ran" our way along the cliffs, climbed up to the jungle terrain and through amazing landscape (coral, vines, heavy jungle and some people's back lots). Finished back where we started and all agreed it was a pretty cool course. The count: Shannon twisted right ankle, Mike dislocated shoulder, Russ hurt groin, and Kanae twisted both ankles... WE HAD A BLAST! And besides, nothing a little beer couldn't fix. Off to the "religion" and initiated Mike. Since it was their 1150th run, we chowed down on tons of food, tons of alcohol and enjoyed a DJ! With plenty to drink (and drink) we headed on to another party for a quick hello and took Mike home to taxi off to the airport!

Sunday 12/3: It came too quick, but I had to end my travels! I had a blast visiting my family and wished I could spend more time with them. After some minor troubles with the flight home (and a fat swollen ankle) I got home in time to meet my coach for the Core Training session. Now off to bed...

Next Week:
Swim 2x's
Bike 1-2x's
Run 4-5x's (based on ankle)
Yoga 2-3x's
Core 2x's

Back on schedule with my eating habits. Trying something new, Reliv, for my migraines. Overall, feeling stronger and rejuvenated!

Checking in from Saipan

Some like to think of vacation as a time to relax and do nothing. For me, it's a chance to do all the workouts that I normally couldn't do. For two weeks I can live like a professional athlete; get up go for a run, eat breakfast, go for a swim, take a nap and then maybe do another workout, then head down for dinner.

The last week I've been in Saipan visiting my brother. Since landing last Sunday I've had the opportunity to participate in a lot of these activities. I'm mostly proud of the fact that I've actually been able to fit this in between all the eating and drinking we've done! I'll post pictures next week, but here's my log for the week:

Thursday 11/16: Early morning core workout with my coach. Feeling stronger in some aspects but since my core is so weak, my lower back is really suffering. I'm thinking I need to consider seeing a physical therapist to have it checked out, as I think it's affecting my right hip too.

Friday 11/17: Traveled from LAX to Japan (11 hour flight) then "puddle jumper" to another Japanese airport, then off for the 6 hour flight to Saipan. Absolutely NO chance to fit in a workout and what really sucked is the video on the plane didn't work from LAX to Japan, so no movies the entire time. I read an entire 400 page book during the trip. I land at 1am SUNDAY Saipan time and head home with my brother and his wife.

Sunday 11/18: During the trip lost a day. I wake up early morning to go on a 4 mile hike with my sister-in-law and their dog Shelby. Afterwards, I head to church with my brother and then afterwards over to PIC for brunch. He hits up the volleyball courts for a beach volleyball tournament, and I hit the "pool" (ok the 75 degree ocean in front of the resort) to swim the Tagaman Triathlon swim course. Beautiful! I don't think I'll ever have a more amazing view while swimming again! After the tournament, we pick up "Spicy Thai"and hang out at Russ and Kanae's house. My main goal for the day is to stay up until 10pm, Saipan time.

Monday 11/19: Wake up for a run down to Laupau Bay again with Kanae. It's a 3 mile hard run-downhill the way out and ALL uphill on the way back. Once done I head back to PIC where I lounge around reading for awhile. By afternoon I get up to do my core exercises on the grass area on the property. Afterwards I head out for a swim for 20 min. For dinner we eat potluck with Russ and Kanae's Bible study group.

Tuesday 11/20: Mike arrives early this morning. We meet him at PIC and then head out to meet my brother's friend for a swim. This swim is pretty amazing too... the "tank to tank" swim. Basically you swim to two WWII tanks that are in the harbor. It's a pretty difficult swim with the choppy weather, but we have a blast. That night we eat down at the Seaside Gallery and enjoy steak with LOTs of wine. Russ and Kanae join us for a nightcap, then Mike and I close down the Buoy Bar with some swing dancing (to a standing ovation!).

Wednesday 11/21: Wake up and run a 4 mile run from PIC. Afterwards head down to the beach for the "beach clean up" day. After breakfast I hit the Tagaman swim, and then convince Mike to join me for my core workout on the beach. We hang out and relax the rest of the day until it's time to head to Russ and Kanae's house for dinner: Grilled shrimp, salad, and homemade chocolate cookies with some fabulous wine! Great preparation for the brutal Turkey Trot tomorrow!

Thursday (Thanksgiving) 11/22: 5:15am wake up and head down to the start of the race! I'll post pictures later... basically this race is ALL uphill... seriously 4.2 miles up, up, up to Mount Tapachau the highest point in Saipan! It took me 55mins to complete and I got first place in my age group (won a turkey!). Kanae also placed in her age group, while Russ (injured groin) and Mike (not a runner) cheer us on. I'm not kidding they had a hill called "the bitch"! Ate plenty the rest of the day and visited three amazing houses for Thanksgiving. People here are so friendly! It's SO unbelievable how welcoming they are! First to the Mister's house for ""lunch", then to Russ's boss's house for a visit, then lastly to Rex's beautiful house for dinner.

Friday 11/23: I treat this day as my "day off"". Mike and I wake up, go to PIC for breakfast then off with Russ to pick up our Scuba Diving equipment. Originally Russ mentioned not taking us to the Grotto since Mike and I are relatively new to scuba. A last minute change of heart (we'd heard someone almost died at Laulau beach-where he originally intended to take us) and we are loaded up and heading exactly where he said might be too challenging for us. Now, I haven't been scuba diving since 2000 in Sydney... so I'm rusty and the brief refresher class Wednesday didn't really sink in yet. We go to the Grotto and from above Russ gives us instructions on where to stay away from (""the washing machine""), which happens to currently have a man in it! We walk down with our gear on, and suddenly it's as if we have walked upon a horror film. People screaming, kids crying, blood coming from two different people, a Chinesee woman fully dress is soaking wet and missing her flip flop. Basically a tourist fell into the washing machine and some others went in to save her. No one was killed, a few injured and plenty of scared to death folks all clung to the rock. We walk by this as if it's an ""everyday""occurrence. My feet are shaking as I put my flippers on with all the madness. Fast forward a few minutes and we are underwater to a peaceful world. Other than a few problems with the amount of weight I"m carrying on my belt, the dive was amazing! Afterwards we head out for some sight seeing: Last Command Post (with Japanese tanks and machine guns from WWII), Bird Island to hear about some of Russ's Adventure racing mishaps, and to the American Memorial museum to learn more about the Island's history. Off to an Italian restaurant for some lunch (learn of Mike's food habits).... and back to PIC to sleep some. That night we meet up with some of Russ and Kanae's friends (Angela and Bill) for dinner at a "fusion"restaurant" in a house that was converted into a restaurant. Fantastic food!

Saturday 11/24: Up at 4:50am to meet Russ's friend, Nate for a 13 mile run. We started at Last Man''s post and headed up for 1-2 miles (thought I was going to die with the camelback and hills). After going up, we hit a trail run in the jungle. Run past Bird Island, and by Banzi Cliff, past some WWII bunkers, and through the property of the original DHL owner's house (he died in an airplane accident-his second one-and the property was overtaken by the jungle). Finish that run in 2:10... back to PIC for a quick swim on the Tagaman loop to loosen the legs, and off for a hike at Forbidden Island. Here it was a long hike down to some tadpools. We hiked up to a water cave and then after some pics, headed up the hill again. This night we went to ""Len's"" a Japanese restaurant, and enjoyed some great exotic food (really tested Mike). Afterwards we headed to the Hyatt for a night show at the Sandcastle... and that's where Mike finally got his ""cheese"". It was a blast!~

Sunday 11/26: Wake up eat some breakfast and then finally surrender to a nap/relaxation. Meet Russ and Kanae at noon for their friend''s wedding down by the beach front. After eating a ton of food, we wrap things up to get ready for the afternoon Triathlon I planned on doing with the local tri group. I chose the short course since I had ran far the day before, it was raining hard, I was riding Russ's bike and figured the heat would zap me! There were about 10 of us total and it cost $10 to participate. The swim was an out and back to the buoy, I think 500 meters (took me about 9 minutes and I was second out of the water). Off on the bike which allowed me to catch the leader (on a mountain bike and part of the relay)... pretty cool, I've NEVER been the leader of the pack. Trying hard to maintain my lead I knew Stuart the man who won the Turkey Trot the day before was right on my tail... and he was doing the LONG course! He passes me just as I missed the turn on the bike, and I come in to transition "first" for the short course. (Transition is my brother's truck!). Off on the run, my sister-in-law with me, but I was warmed up by now and amped I was in "first" place". I ran the 4k in 19 minutes and took "first"". To celebrate... a warm beer and help baby sit my brother's friend, Tyce, his three kids. Afterwards back to Russ and Kanae's house for leftovers and some Monty Pythons... and home to crash!

(Today) Monday, 11/27: I need to get my core workout in and maybe a swim. Mike and I have decided a massage is necessary (especially since my lower back is tight) and then sunset cruise tonight. A typoon might be coming in, so we are unsure of how that will pan out...

This coming week:
Run 3-4 time (hash run for one)
Tank to tank duathlon (Saturday)
Swim 4 times
Core workout 2 times (one more on Sunday when I get back to the states)
Bike-mountain biking at least once
Eat more
drink more
and continue to enjoy vacation!

Pictures will post later....

Working out in a closet

This Week:
1 day swim, as planned
1 day bike, as planned-one day on the stationary bike in Tucson (not ideal, especially since it was a sit-down stationary bike, but hey, I got it in)
5 days running , as planned (including a 15 transition run and an 8 mile long run)
2 days yoga, as planned (one with studio and one attempt while traveling with stupid DVD)
2 days strength/core training, as planned (did one session by myself in the hotel room)

I'm pretty excited that I stuck with it this week! I was traveling for business to Memphis and Tucson. I am excited because even being out of the state and in the midst of travel chaos, I managed to stick to my planned workout schedule and only missed one day of weight training. Plus, I did a decent job of watching what I ate while traveling (ok, a few moments of weakness).

Monday I made it to swim. I haven't been in awhile so I put myself in the second slowest lane (no real exception there). There were three men in the lane with me, and automatically I was "put" last. By the end of the session, I was leading the lane! If there is one thing I know... it's how to hold back on a long session so you can still have energy on the second half of practice. Needless to say, I gained some respect from the guys. They started telling our coach I was kicking their butts and had to go first.

Monday I also managed to get a 4 mile run after swim. I took it nice and slow being completely aware that my body as recovering from the 10 miler on Saturday.

Tuesday was my "off" day for two reasons. One, it was my scheduled off day/recovery day. Second, I traveled out to Memphis and there was no time.

Wednesday, was another travel day to head to Tucson, but I was able to sneak downstairs to the hotel gym (ok, really it was a closet with a few treadmills, bikes and weights).

Thursday, I went online to check out some local runs (usatf.org) and found one that left from my hotel and ran on University of Arizona's campus. I ran through the student union, through the stadium and around some "no traffic" student trails. 6.3 miles later I treated myself to a coffee and some mango juice. Upstairs to do my Offseason Core/Strength training. Damn that was hard! I had 7 exercises to do, 3 sets of 10 each. It took me about an hour and half to finish and I was sweating HARD! If I had to walk the length of my hotel room again, it would kill me!

Friday, sore from the Offseason Training/hotel room workout... I met a coworker to show him the trail I'd ran the day before. Seriously me legs were dying! We ran a compromised pace for the first loop, then I sent him on his way so I could slow down and get my heartrate to a more reasonable level-especially with doing 8 miles on Saturday. Again, another treat of coffee and strawberry/banana juice, and I was heading out of Tucson.

Saturday, still sore from the Offseason Training, I ran 8 miles with my 9 min/mile group. Finished in 1:15:00. Stretched and chatted it up with the runners, many of which hit a milestone of their own by running the 8. Rush home, shower and head off to my yoga class. Mistakenly told my yoga instructor that I was an offseason triathlete with a weak core... "Because Shannon's an athlete, we are going to push her harder... come one Shannon, hold that pose, you're an athlete..." Note to self, never bring up your a triathlete again to your instructor! At the end of class I told him, "I never said I was a GOOD athlete!"

Still struggling with nutrition and my poor eating habits. Been exhausted lately... most likely due to kicking up my workouts and the travel.

This week:
Swim: 2 days
Offseason Core/Strength Training: 2 days
Run: 4 days
Yoga: 1 day
Bike: 1-2 days
Leave Friday for Saipan! I hope to clock off a long run, a swim and some biking before Sunday.

Patience is a virtue

This week:
10 mile long run
4 days running (including the 10 mile run, equals 21 miles)
3 days of yoga
1 day of strength/core training (NEW!)
1 day of stationary bike (40 minutes)

During my long run on Saturday, my legs felt horrible. I think it's because I'm still recovering (I'm hoping!). I set out to run with my 9 min/mile group and ended up cutting the 12 miler down to 10. I held the group back to more of a 9:30-10 and my heartrate was thru the roof! I know I lost a lot of fitness after being sick. I've just got to remember it's going to take patience to get back to where I was at (in addition to losing 5 lbs).

Today I started a new program that will run 10 weeks. It's a core/strength training program to help strengthen my weak muscles, enhance my performance, and prevent injuries (hello plantar faciatis). I really like it thus far. There are 6 of us total from NOVA and it's so strange how these "easy" exercises cause us to sweat and grunt. All in all, I have a very weak core! Again, patience!

Today I also went down to San Diego for the Challenged Athlete's Foundation race. Amazing! There was a guy who had only one limb and he not only ended up swimming the 1.2 mile swim, but also kicked ass in the 1/2 marathon. What an inspiration! Plus, saw Bob Babbit... a good day!

Next Week:
1 day swim (due to travel and my "Gourmet Group" this is all I can get in)
1 day bike (again due to travel)
4-5 days running
2 days yoga (due to travel gonna use the DVDs I bought)
2 days strength/core training
1 day weight training

Feeling better emotionally. Truthfully, the only thing I want to do is stay inside and recollect. I'm a hermit. Totally fine with this but need to make sure it doesn't become too comfortable. With this new program I'm meeting new people, plus I plan to join (yes, pay money for...) the Torture Clinic in Saddleback. Maybe I'll meet some more people there.

2 week goal:
lose 3-4 lbs
Feel stronger and healthier

The physical and emotional

Daylight savings time. A chance to get back on the early morning wagon. And now that I'm feeling better (thanks antibiotics) I plan to get back out there for the 5:45am swim class.

Today went to two clinics: one put on by OCTC, the other, by NOVA. The NOVA one had me interested in joining a program to get my core in shape. It's be twice a week for three months. Only problem is my work schedule and my vacation. I'll sit on that until I figure out what to do.

This week was able to pull off 1 spin class and 1 "long" run. I am antsy from not being able to hold a rhythm. But that's in hindsight... I'm trying to move forward, knowing it takes time... and I have time before Wisconsin.

This coming week's schedule:
2-3 days swim
2 days of bike
4-5 days of run, one 12 mile run
2-3 days of yoga
2 days of weights
run with Snails Pace on Wed

On another more personal note...what's my problem this week?
A year ago my ex told me we needed to take a break from each other. He told me I had issues to work out and that I should see a therapist. He told me that because he thought I was jealous all the time. What he never seemed to see/understand is the actions he chose never allowed me to feel secure in our relationship. He constantly needed female attention and it needed to come from everywhere... his work, his family, our friends. It was always his goal to be the charmer, the one to grab the interest of the all the women in the room. And on top of that, he would do it in a way that neglected me. I always felt his desire for attention far outweighed my needs. If ever I talked with him about it, I was instantly a bad guy. I tried many approaches... asking to be involved to understand his need, supporting him at times to go on "girl's night out" without me, and simply being straight forward. What the therapist said a year ago is that the only problem I had was accepting all the blame in the relationship. He said since I was never jealous with previous boyfriends, that Doug's actions were something outside of my familiarity. His selfishness prevented him from listening to me. Anyway, I know this has nothing to do with my training, but this week was a depressing week for me. It consumed my thoughts and brought me down. And that always affects your motivation, eating patterns, and energy. Not only do you feel weak physically some weeks but also emotionally. Enough of this crap...

Looking forward to a good week!

Down, down, down...

That's what has happened to me this week. My "common cold" took me down!

In an effort to get better, I skipped my swim class, and didn't run. Man! Not doing anything is making me crazy with boredom! I'm sure my legs are fresh and recovered, and I can't wait to get back into the swing of things. I even thought this morning I could do the "coffee ride" with my friends followed up with swim, but again the clogged up lungs had other things in mind.

Running and working out allows me to relieve stress. It's "me time". I get a chance to work things out in my head (picture Mission Impossible-the first one-when Tom Cruise had that electric board and he organized images visually with the use of his hands to solve the case). I feel sexier and happier.

Next week I'm in LA for work. That means "hurrying up and waiting", being tempted by a tub (yes, a tub) of M&Ms, and long hours while we photograph food. But I'm still planning on getting back on track and I understand the hotel we are staying at not only has a gym but a pool. Armed with my swim schedule and determination... I hope to succeed!

Finished my schedule for the Ironman. After working it out, I actually didn't feel as overwhelmed as I did the first round! Amazing. I need to focus on base training until March 12th. The magic date that kicks off six months of training. Next up, figuring out "life" and how that might affect my training. Time to start working around things.

Kona was this weekend! Congrats to the participants! Hope to pull some inspiration from you all!

Sick day(s)

Sucks! Just when you get in the rhythm of something, a common cold comes along and swipes your feet from underneath. It was my own fault, right? I chose to run the race last weekend even though I wasn't feeling well... I chose to stick around and cheer people on wearing the same sweat soaked clothes from the race...

So, unfortunately, I haven't checked much on my "to do" list this week. I didn't even get a recovery run in after the race! Oh well... gotta get back in the saddle, right? As soon as I'm feeling well, I'll be hitting the trail and getting in the pool. I promise myself that!

My adjusted list:
Yoga 1x
Run 15 miles
Bike 1x
Swim 1x
Check out new tri club and new running club (I forgot about that one from last week)

A dip in "the pool"

Alright, I set some good goals last week and it's time to check in and see how I panned out:

Ran 8 miles total
Swam (oh yeah!) 2x's with NOVA
Bike (OMG!) 30 minutes... hey better than nothing!
Yoga 2x's
Ran the Long Beach 1/2 Marathon today in 1:53:00

Not outstanding, but I'm proud I got in the pool. Especially since it was freezing on Wednesday (might be why I am feeling a sore throat yesterday and today) at swim or as I like to call it, "at the pool". I'm also super happy to have gotten on the bike once this week. Why is this so tough!? Being a runner first and a triathlete second, it's so much easier to lace up the shoes than get in the saddle or take the plunge into the pool.

The Long Beach race was cool. I think the last time I ran that course was in 2001. They changed the course and now (or for the last few years) we run down on the boardwalk. Other than the horrible headwind on the way back to the finish line, I really liked the course. I felt great the first 2-3 miles clocking off 8-8:30/miles. Then, after we passed the cheering crowd, it started to kick in that I had to keep this pace for another 10. No worries, a little Skid Row and Red Hot Chili Peppers, a beautiful course and the euphoria you get running, helped bring me in! I'm a little stiff now, but nothing a good old ice bath and some advil couldn't handle. Besides it's all worth it... good times!

The other thing I'm proud of is for the most part I made my meals this week at home. No fast food or easy junk food at the grocery store. This week I was armed with a menu for the week! I enjoyed grilled BBQ Chicken salad, Shrimp Pasta, Chicken Stirfry and veggie burgers (ok, not too exciting on that one).

Now for next week's checklist... I think I 'm going to stick with the same goal. I feel it's a great start to create my base before training kicks in...

Yoga 3x's
Run 4x's this week-let's say 25 miles (10 mile long run Saturday)
Swim 2x's
Bike 2x's-at least one spin class
Continue to eat well and maintain positive attitude!

Following in the steps of a Tour de France champ!

Well, there you go... I've got a checklist!

Ran 21 miles this week
Yoga 3x's
Swim... no
Bike... uh, no biking either

But still, that's pretty good considering my last few logs and the fact that I was traveling for work. One cool thing this week: I was in Portland, Oregon and ran a course the hotel suggested... while I was waiting in the airport later in the trip, I picked up the Runner's World magazine and, low and behold, Lance Armstrong was running the same trail! Pretty cool to see an athlete you admire doing the same thing you are!

This coming week, here is what I'm planning:
Swim 2-3 times
Run with at least one new running group and get 4 runs in
Do the Long Beach 1/2 marathon on Sunday
Bike at least twice
Yoga 3 times

I've got my menu planned for this week, so I'll have healthy meals. I've noticed I'm very good at eating well all the way up until 3pm. So I bought healthy snack food to help prevent overeating at night.

Also, I am feeling more energetic these days. My legs don't feel like lead, and I'm able to get up in the mornings more easily. And, although I'm still thinking about the ex, I am not letting it get to me. Some habits just take a little longer to change.

All the reasons to sleep in...

I'm exhausted these days. It could be the season change, or the end of an aggressive tri season, or the craziness at work. But I have been sleeping in and missing my workouts. Not a good combination as I think it affects my mood overall. I'm scared I've been distracted and depressed about my ex. I saw him this week driving and it was a like a sock in the stomach. I can't seem to get him off my mind.

I've made a few promises to myself. I'll get my workouts in. I'll make sure to schedule time for them. At work, I'll take my "lunch break" and go for a run. And I'll plan to leave at a decent time, especially to make it to the Yoga or Spin class-just cuz I don't have someone to spend time with, doesn't mean I should spend it at work. Besides, I'm hoping this schedule will get me focused on something other than my ex and how much I miss him.

I travel this week, so I'm committing to 3 days of workouts. I should be able to do that-sounds easy enough.

I will get serious about my nutrition. Cut back on the wine and watch what I eat. My commitment is one week-week by week. I leave for Saipan in November to visit my brother and his wife. I refuse to be the "fat sister". Plus, the turkey trot out there is brutal, so I'll need to get in shape!

So I've got a plan in place. I'll go to swim (despite how cold it might be), and take the yoga class. And, I'll go for a walk versus hole up in my apartment depressed about someone who didn't care enough.

Ironman isn't something you can fake!

If this week is any indication of how training will go, then I'm in trouble. Lately, the crisp fall air has kept me under the covers rather than rolling out of bed for my 5:45am swim class. (excuse #1) I've missed my lunchtime runs and even worst lost my lunchtime running partner due to a new job (excuse #2). Don't even get me started on the bike (I don't have a cool excuse for that one yet, but I'm sure there is one)!

And those extra 5 lbs! in the last four months, really??!! Is that necessary?

The good news... Patrick got into Wisconsin. Even though he has yet to figure out if that's good news to him, I'm happy. I've finally got someone else to train with and... at the end of a long day, collapse on the couch with while not feeling guilty. It's so nice to date someone that has the same interests as me. What a novel thought! I feel he truly understands where I'm coming from and can say the right words to help ease my concerns. Or vice versa!

My biggest concern is keeping my head into training. I have figured out that I have a bad habit of doing well on the first race but doing horrible (no REALLY, horribly) on the second attempt. It's one of two things mentally: either I have a hard time getting motivated to do all that training from the beginning again, or I think I can do it again, but without training as hard. Either way, I need to nip this in the bud quick. Ironman isn't something you can fake! (Oh, hi! more pressure)

Off to try and find the training schedule I used in 2004. If it seems do-able for this year, then I'll back it out to the Wisconsin race.

2007 Ironman Wisconsin, here I come!

When I finished my first Ironman in 2004, it seemed people wanted to know two things:
1.) How did I do?
2.) Would I do another one?

The first question was easy to answer-it was the best day of my life! After months of training and sacrificing so much, I just "sat back" and enjoyed race day. I followed everyone's advice and took it in one event at a time. First, I battled through the 2200 triathletes in the 2.4 mile swim on the lake. Waved 'Hello!' to the scuba divers that hung at the bottom of the last bouy (safety precautions) before turning into the swim/bike transition. After being "stripped" of my wetsuit, I then headed off for a LONG ride through the wine country. All along the 112 mile bike, locals cheered us on by ringing cow bells, and sitting out front of their farms in lounge chairs. Back into town, I dismounted the bike, and tried to straighten my body out for the run. 26.2 miles later, I had formed new friendships, accomplished a major goal and now could rightfully be called an Ironman! Although my only goal was to finish, I was extremely pleased to complete the race in 13:28:19!

The second question was the harder one. For 6 months I was committed to my bike, my running shoes and the chlorinated water. I became a regular at the gym and on Pacific Coast Highway. I knew the names of the bike mechanics at Edge Cyclesports better than my close friends' babies. It was common for me to decline invitations to Bridal Showers, Birthdays, and almost a wedding (thanks Jules, for arranging the date so I could attend!). My friends and family understood my dedication, but sometimes it interferred with their life milestones... and well, that, was frustrating for them. My boyfriend at the time, Doug, claims I was Dr Jackle and Mr Hyde with my switch personalities. Although he didn't understand what "training" meant, he supported me as best he could with little knowledge of what lie ahead. I was tired, irritable, cranky, and hungry all the time. I constantly felt guilty for spending hours on end training or being late to a commitment due to a flat tire. I was worried to death that I physically couldn't complete this distance and constantly felt the weight of failure on my shoulders. And after a month of training, those feelings never left me, but people began to adapt to my new lifestyle. Doug simply stopped waiting on me for breakfast after a ride/run, friends simply gave a light mention of a celebration and family just "grinned and beared it".

Having said all that and being told that if I completed another Ironman, I'd be single, I struggled internally with the dilema of "best day of my life" and being a "responsible participant" in my personal relationships, and so I unwillingly told people it would be my last. (I mean, did I really want to do that again??).

That nagging conflict never went away. Doug and I broke up in the past year. More friends got married, had kids and just basically became involved in their lives. And family didn't care what I did as long as I was happy. So...

After a quick "bet" (ok, three martinis into a conversation) with someone I was dating and a little convencing, I decided to return to the short lived love "affair" I had with Ironman and enter another race. My hope to return to Pentictian for my second race diminished when Canada changed their buddy system signup and Ironman Wisconsin became my returning race.

In the past year, I've already tackled a few 1/2 marathons and completed five races in this year's triathlon season. I even went back to coaching a local beginning marathon and half marathoners program to keep motivated. Life feels comfortable (and exciting) again. I'm not missing out on "something" anymore.

For the next year, I hope to write updates on my progress. I plan to talk about my fears (not being able to do as well as I did on the first, or worst, not finishing at all), my workouts, how I manage to juggle training with life, my health and my progress. I'm lucky to have someone train with me and keep me company through this next adventure... called Ironman!
