Do as I say and not as I do... First injury of training-the pulled hamstring. So, running the LA Marathon, then doing the 1/2 Century the next weekend, then jumping into Ironman training... and adding a Fartlek wasn't smart! I should have listened to myself when I tell my runners to take it easy and don't over do it.
Injury--- My fault!
Week 2 accomplishments:
Mon: Swim (75 min)
Tues: Speed Clinic (about 120 min), run (12 min)
Wed: Swim (75 min), Run (60 min-The Imfamous Fartleks)
Thurs: Off-life busy & rest
Fri: off (rest)
Sat: Long Run (55 min)
Sun: Long Ride (216 min), run (20 min), Massage to help the leg
Nutrition Update: Did well with the no carbs after 4pm, except Friday. Went to El Matador and had tacos, beans, chips... then a brainstorming and had more mexican food. Saturday night had too many calories while babysitting. Had wine on Thursday and Friday . However, I did eat right on the long bike (200-250 calories/hour).
Bike Calories:
To start-Oatmeal, Cottage Cheese & raisins; Coffee with milk
During: (2) Motortabs, (2) scoops of Carbopro, (4) Fig Newtons, (1) bottle of water, (1) package of Sports Beans
After: 1/2 Bagel and light cream cheese with tomatoe, large coffee with milk (was full from ride/run still)
Heartrate: Still was too high for my training. On the bike I was better but we went flat so it was easy to maintain.
Week 3 goals:
Mon: Swim (75 min)
Tues: Speed Clinic (about 120 min), Run (15-20 min)
Wed: Swim (75 min), Bike (60-90 min)
Thur: Run (60-80 min), Core Class (50 min)
Fri: off
Sat: Run (70-90 min), Bike (60-90)
Sun: Bike (180-210), Run (15-20), Core (50 min)
Nutrition: Continue to watch proportions, and avoid "empty calories". Eat meals that are pre cooked. No wine on weekdays.
Heartrate: Really concentrate on lowering the heartrate.
Stretching/Icing: Need to take care of my hammie!! Ice and massage and gingerly stretching. Goal of healing fast!

Week 1-Getting up to 'speed'
Overall I'd rate my success this week with workouts as a 8 (1-10, 10 being great). I got most of the workouts in except Monday, because we were traveling. Then I was able to some of the optional workouts in as well.
Mon: Official Day of Training! Traveling back from Solvang-no workout
Tues: Speed Clinic (120 min) & Brick run (15 min)
Wed: Swim (60 min)-cramping in the legs, had to get out of the pool
Thur: Core Class (about 50 min) & Run (67 mins)
Fri: Off
Sat: Run (82 min), easy trainer ride (40 min)
Sun: Rode (184 min) south through Laguna Beach, Dana Point, San Clemente and back to hit Newport Coast once. Then off the bike and out for a Run (about 20 min). I might do Core class tonight. I bonked on the run because I didn't have enough calories on the bike... remember the lessons you learned first round and try to not make the same mistakes. that means 200 calories per hour... need to bulk up since I only had about 250 total on the 3 hour ride... bad!
Feel good. Legs are tight from the Speed Clinic which is hard. I hate going anaerobic... which is why I love distance training... so this class is tough. I actually love the short run after the ride and recruited a few people to join me (I was a little scared doing it in the dark by myself).
Back in the pool. Yikes! That was tough, but I stuck to it for most of the practice. We completed 2100 meters. My toes and abductor started tightening up (most likely because I was dehydrated and from Speed Clinic). My goal this coming week is to really pay attention to stretching so I can prevent this (hopefully).
Nutrition Update: Back down 2.0 Lbs and started eating better for me. This week no starches after 4pm (per my bike coach), and more healthy choices.
Heartrate: Kinda high probably because I'm still in recovery. Goal to keep within my zone.
Week 2's goals:
Mon: Swim (75 min)
Tues: Speed Clinic (about 120 min), run (15-20 min)
Wed: Swim (75 min), Ride (60-90 min)
Thurs: Run (60-80 min), core class (50 min)
Fri: off
Sat: Long Run (70-90 min), Easy trainer ride (60-90 min)
Sun: Long Ride (150-210 min), run (15-20 min), core class (50 min)
Nutrition: Continue with no carbs after 4pm and no wine on weekdays & eat right on the long bike (200-250 calories/hour)
Heartrate: Focus on zone I need to be in (scared to overtrain!)

Kicking off 6 months of training-Week 1
Starting today, I begin Ironman Training, officially! I'm excited and nervous. At the begining of any training program there is hope and anxiety for the race. It's very fresh and new, which helps to build that excitment. However, I am nervous for the amount of time and energy devoted to this. Ironman is no small goal. So, I need to keep my spirits up and my drive has to be strong. I don't want to poop out 3 months in and have to force myself through each workout.
I'm thankful to have a bunch of support. Not only do I have my family and friends behind me. But I also have my friend, Patrick, that will be going through the training with me. Not to mention, Elaine, Adrian, my runners and other triathletes to help on those long days.
So, here's to a safe and successful 6 months. Wish me luck!
This past week's accomplishments:
Monday: recovery from LA Marathon, walked 2 miles
Tues: I feel pretty good! Didn't exercise
Wed: Ran 2.5 miles, slow. Starting to come back
Thurs: Nothing
Fri: Left for Solvang
Sat: Solvang 1/2 Century (completed in about 3 1/2 hours). I'm not happy with my bike set up. My back started to hurt about 15 miles in. It was a tough ride, and my spirits deflated when I got dropped 10 miles in. I thought the Torture Clinic would have put me in better placement, but I guess LA Marathon took more out of me than expected.
Sun: Ran 5 miles easy. Felt good, but slow (I'm slow, not fragile).
Goals this week:
Mon: Swim (I've already missed this, but am getting a massage)
Tues: Speed Clinic (70 min intervals/ 3 min), Run (brick-15-20 min)
Wed: Swim (1:15), easy trainer ride (60-90 min)
Thur: Core class, 60-80 run (fartleks)
Fri: Run (? Swim ?), Yoga
Sat: Long Run 50-70, ride easy 60-90, yoga
Sun: Long ride 120-180 min, brick 15-20, swim
Cooked meals for the week. Aiming to lose some of the poundage I gained this weekend. No alcohol til weekend: 1 per hour of workout- no more.

Count Down to LA Marathon
I've got one more week til I get to check off another goal. The LA Marathon coming up on Sunday, 3/4 is meant to toughen me up mentally. I must admit, I'm definitely ready to wind things down (only for a little while because I have Solvang 1/2 Century and, ultimately, Ironman). I don't plan to "race" Sunday but actually run with my 9:30-10 minute group. It's all about training for me!
Here is what I had this week leading up to LA:
Mon: 4 miles easy & Yoga class
Tues: 3 miles on the treadmill, a short core workout and then Torture Clinic**
**We did our BIGGEST ride-a 30 minute climb! Man, was that tough!! All that work should pay off at Solvang.
Wed: Off
Thurs: Core Class (Carl killed us again: 200 yard run, 5 push ups, 10 situps, and 15 lunges... as many as we circuits we could do in 20min. I had 11 circuits). Torture testing-this went bad. Not only did I gain weight, but my heartrate didn't change much due to the caffine I'd had that day. The coach was literally disappointed in me... and mentioned it several times. Sucked!
Fri: I took this off... resting up and carbo loaded with runners.
Sat: off
Sun: LA MARATHON!! This race was ok. I was disappointed in the narrow streets at the beginning, especially with 25,000+ runners. That made it hard to hold our pace (10/mile). I wanted simply to stick with the 10/mile runners since this was just a training run for me. We stuck together until mile 10-11, then lost 3 people to the bathrooms. Jim and I trekked along and then lost each other at mile 19. At mile 22 a nasty hill... it's the downhill that KILLED me. From there out, I need to dig deep mentally... this is EXACTLY what I set out to achieve this race. I pulled through despite the heat (80 degrees) and pain. I finished with the slowest time EVER: 4:38:21.
Now onto Solvang 1/2 century this weekend....

Past few weeks
Here we go again...
Past few weeks workout log:
Mon, 2/12-easy 4 mile run. But I think I wanted to walk in after mile 3!
Tues 2/13-4 mile run & Torture Clinic for 1:20:00. Including getting my certificate on the rollers! (40 minutes all by myself on the rollers!)
Wed 2/14: Off!
Thurs 2/15: 4 miles, Off Season Core Training (Carl killed us with a circuit of kettlebells, burpies, sit ups, push ups, lunges and pull ups), Torture Clinic 1:20:00.
Fri 2/16: Off (Man! I'm tired!)
Sat 2/17: New Training group started so I only got 4 miles in. Darn! I should have gotten in 10.
Sun 2/18: Went to San Luis Opispo to visit friends...
Mon 2/19: Back from SLO, massage with Mary (not as bad as last visit, but she still had me off the table), and got in contact with an old friend, Adrian, who is doing Ironman New Zealand in a few weeks!
Tues 2/20: 4 miles easy, but I skipped Torture (first time!). Met up with Rick and Julie for dinner... they think I look burnt out. I gotta say, I'm ready for LA to be over with and Torture clinic to switch up.
Wed 2/21: 4 miles easy
Thurs 2/22: 4 miles & Torture clinic 1:20:00 (with a 24 minute climb!). My abductors were screaming!!!!
Fri 2/23: Off
Sat 2/24: 8 miles but was tired. Supposed to do 10 but didn't have it in me
Sun: Slept in until 10am! Man I needed it.
I just feel wiped out. Between LA Marathon, and Torture clinic I just feel like toast! My legs are strong, and I feel ok, but I'm just exhausted. I'm still trying to listen to my body and take care of myself (mostly through sleep and eating right).
Why the hell can't I get nutrition right??!! Too many empty calories, too little calories overall, no desire to eat the healthy food... etc!

Back on track
This week felt good! I feel back on track with training, but it was an eye opener that with training, I need sleep, to eat well and look out for me!
I've started to say "no". No, I can't do Girl's Weekend in Palm Springs because it's during training. No, I can't go out for drinks tonight because I am SO tired and have a long run tomorrow morning. No, I'm not drinking right now. Hopefully they will understand like they always do.
Anyway, here is how this week panned out...
Mon: 4 miles SLOW. I was tired from the run on Sunday and actually, physically wanted to walk back to work by mile 3. But I'm glad I did it because I think it saved me on recovery.
Tues: Torture Clinic. Felt sluggish here too. We did Erg then trainer. My bike seat was SO uncomfortable that it wasn't a good night.
Wed: 3.5 miles on the treadmill. I felt ok, but still tired and was bored because I thought it was supposed to rain
Thur: Did the core workout in the morning. It was a circuit training session and kicked my butt! Starting to feel a cold coming on-throat on fire and red. Constantly cold at work, ended up doing Torture Clinic for 85 miles. Started with rollers and I rode by myself (using a trashcan) for 40 mins! But by the time I hit the erg, I was struggling! I hope it's due to the race and sickness. Otherwise it might be from trying to do the "detox" (no alcohol, no processed foods, no baked good, no nutrition bars, white fish or grilled chicken, fresh veggies and fruits, and only whole grain wheat products) and not getting enough calories in.
Fri: Day off! Slept 9.5 hours to try and kick the cold before it come on. Then came home early from work to sleep 1/2 hour.
Sat: Ran 16 miles! This is the last long run before LA Marathon. It should have been 22 miles but I think the nutrition program zapped my energy. I didn't have enough calories, no more water on me and was exhausted (bonking). I turned around and knew when to call it. Now it's taper time!
Sun: Suppose to ride, but due to rain didn't do anything but sleep in as far as the bike. Did do my core training class and got retested to see how I progressed.
Tapering for LA will be nice. I wanted to get this in so I would be mentally prepared for Ironman. The last marathon I ran was Chicago in 2002 (Ironman 2004 didn't count since it was all three). So, this is part of my preparation.
Then the Torture Clinic is helping prep me for Solvang 1/2 the weekend after LA. I love that this class has gotten me in shape. The next session is the "Speed Clinic" and I have yet to decide if I'll take it. My Core Class technically finished and in order to continue with it, I need to be involved with Multisport. I'm disappointed that it requires me to sign up with a group I can never train with (their practices tailor more for a stay at home mom with no children). But this year I said I'd do what it takes to get prepared for Ironman.... so I'll sign up. Maybe I can do the trainer session with Mike, some track workouts in Irvine and then of course the swimming and Core Training.
This week's goals:
Mon: Run, yoga
Tues: Torture Clinic, Core work
Wed: Run
Thurs: Core, Run, and Torture Clinic
Fri: Off
Sat: 10 miles
Sun: Might be out of town with friends.
Try to lose another pound and stop the detox phase of nutrition-it obviously killed me.

An opportunity for improvement
I had an opportunity to improve this week...
Mon: 3.5 miles on the treadmill
Tues: Torture Clinic
Wed: Nothing
Thurs: Torture Clinic
Fri: Nothing
Sat: Bike Fitting (does that count for exercise?)
Sun: Pacific Shoreline 1/2 Marathon 1:49:07 (PR on this course was set 4 years ago with 1:41)
I've been slacking on the Core class. It's been SUPER hard to get up at 5am on Thursdays. I think the combo LA Marathon training and Torture Clinic are kicking my butt. I'm TIRED!
I'm happy about the Pacific Shoreline race. I wasn't expected to try and "race" the course but I love that course. It's my favorite 1/2 Marathon. I went out slower than usual on the first half and then was able to get negative splits on the second half! Very cool!
Eating habits are horrible. I'm trying to see if I can change something and I know it's going to be hard. I think I need to give up my red wine and snack foods for awhile. They currently are getting me in trouble. Plus, with work so stressful, I eat M&Ms!
This weeks goals:
Mon: Ran 4 miles (help get rid of that lactic acid-was a HARD run, I was tired)
Tues: Torture Clinic
Wed: Run 4 miles
Thurs: Core Class, Run, Torture Clinic
Fri: Off
Sat: 22 miles
Sun: 40 miles with 2 hill repeats, a short brick of 2 miles and Core Class
If I can no processed foods or alcohol this week.
Mon: 3.5 miles on the treadmill
Tues: Torture Clinic
Wed: Nothing
Thurs: Torture Clinic
Fri: Nothing
Sat: Bike Fitting (does that count for exercise?)
Sun: Pacific Shoreline 1/2 Marathon 1:49:07 (PR on this course was set 4 years ago with 1:41)

It's a good pain!
This weekend was awesome! What a fun time!
Mon: 4 mile easy run with a friend
Tues: Torture Clinic (clocked just under 30 miles: rollers then trainer)
Wed: Day off
Thurs: Didn't make it to core class, but Torture clinic (again about 29 miles: Trainer, then Erg bike)
Fri: Day off
Sat: Started feeling worn down (went out Thursday night late) and decided the best thing was to skip the 10 miler and rest the body. Did get a massage and found about 8 knots (I think they should be named!)
Sun: FUN DAY! Rode 39 miles on PCH with rolling hills and one Newport Coast hill. Then ran a brick for 20 minutes. After a celebratory bagel breakfast with Patrick, I had my Core class... Carl killed us with a "Crossfit" session: 1/4 mile on the treadmill, 50 jumping pull ups, 30 situps, 30 kettle bell swings, 20 bench jumps. Then repeat four times at the fastest time you can do.
I'm sore today, but it was worth it and it's the GOOD pain. Now I want to focus on taking care of my body this week. With Sunday's hard workouts, I took an easy 3.5 mile run today. Stretched extra good.
GOAL this week:
Stretch
Roll out legs/feet for the knots
Ice
Mon: run
Tues: core training, run, Torture Clinic
Wed: Day off
Thurs: Core training, run, Torture Clinic
Fri: Yoga, run
Sat: Bike fit, run short
Sun: Pacific Shoreline 1/2 Marathon, Bike (hope to get at least 20 miles in), Core Training
I've lost a pound this week. YEAH! I watched the "What it takes" DVD Saturday night and found out a Champion Ironman Athlete (like Peter Reid) eat 42 meals a week. No wonder I "die" each night... I'm not taking in enough calories.
GOAL: Lose 8 lbs total by March.

Getting back to my regular schedule
These past two weeks' events completed...
Torture clinic:
Second day went well! The first order of business for the clinic is weighing in. THANK GOD, that miscalculated my weight on Tuesday (Seriously, I thought I gained 12 lbs in three days!). So ends up I lost "some" weight... it's in the right direction even if it's baby steps. Second on the agenda... the rollers. As I have mentioned before, I've never ridden on rollers before Tuesday. They help a rider hold their line by working on your balance. Tuesday, I needed my partner's help pretty much the whole time with at least one hand on my bike for balance. Thursday, however, Tom had to take off after my first 20 minutes on the bike. Coach said I still had another 10 minutes before moving over to the trainer. With Coach Robert's help, I got moving on the rollers, pretty soon he took his hands away (his tough love-gotta learn sooner or later), then he had to "step away" for awhile... next thing I know, I'm (scared to death) riding the rollers by myself! What an amazing feeling!
This past Tuesday and Thursday for class I quickly learned my lesson on being properly fueled for the session. Tuesday I bonked. I didn't eat enough and felt the result during the erg bike session. However, Thursday I bounced back when I ate dinner before the class. Other than simply being tired on my second session, the rollers, I felt ok. And I think the reason for my fatigue is I'm getting used to the class being added to my normal training schedule. Hopefully my endurance will pick up soon.
Speaking of my normal training schedule, I ran a long 21 miler this weekend. It felt good and I ran an average of 9:30. The last two miles I was tired, but at the end of the day I was happy. It took us under 4 hours and most of my runners hit a milestone... very cool.
I also got my Core/Strength Training classes in (one of the two thrusdays and a sunday-this sunday's class was canceled). Our test should be coming up soon and I get to see how much I've improved.
Today I was tired! We did go out last night a bit too late, but I think I was just tired overall. My goal has been to get a long ride in on Sundays and althought I did that last Sunday with a brick... today I slept in.
So this week's schedule:
Monday: Run, Yoga, core work
Tues: run and Torture clinic
Wed: core work
Thur: Run, Torture clinic
Fri: run
Sat: 10 mile run, MASSAGE!
Sun: Ride 30-35 miles, 20 min run, core work

Let the torture begin!
Finished the OC 1/2 Marathon in 1:50:56
My first time doing this race! Man, watch out for those rolling hills at the end! I went out fast... like a 7:20 pace for 3 miles. Then I started to realize (feel) my mistake and brought it down to an 8 min pace. Needless to say the day was HOT, the rolling hills and steady climb to finish killed me, but I had a blast and enjoyed the race. I'd definietly do it again.
Torture Clinic-Day one
It was torturous! No, not that bad, but it wasn't fun. Sitting there in the saddle I recalled what the brochure said... "must be mentally tough to handle course". So, I pushed out my complaints and continued to peddle. 40 minutes later, I moved over to the rollers. Now, being it was the first time I've ever been on rollers, I was scared to death. I had an awesome partner, Tom, who built my confidence up. 20 min later I was done and even managed to ride a few times with Tom only holding the back of the bike. I'm excited to see the results from the clinic, but must admit my weigh in didn't go well... it will continue to be a struggle. I'm definietly not a "wirey" athlete... so weight will always impact my times.
This week at another photoshoot and despite my efforts to eat well, the team keeps pushing food on me. It's as if as soon as you say, "no thanks" it challenges them to force food at you more. I've held off pretty good, but today, the peanut M&Ms were calling my name! (now, why am I confused on gaining weight, as mentioned above?)

Post Holiday Work!
Alright, not only have I slacked on my workouts, but apparently I've neglected my workout log/blog.
Let's see, there were plenty of holiday parties, lots of shopping, and more returning, then of course XMas cards, wrapping, XMas Cocktails... right, keep on scheduled for both workouts and nutrition!? I have some MAJOR catching up to do.
I'm still on schedule for the LA Marathon. I ran a second 18 mile run. The first sucked, simply because I was jumping from 13-14 miles up to 18. The IT Bands were screaming at me due to the "too fast, too soon, too far" motto, plus the terrain was slanted and didn't help. But at least the second 18 miler went extremely well and brought back the confidence I was lacking.
I've kept with my off season core strength training but felt really weak last week. I think I was fighting off a seasonal cold. THANKS Reliv! I think I avoided it!
This Reliv... I take it twice a day. When I'm done with my long run I drink one. And I feel it's really helped with my recovery. Not to mention, thus far I've not had any migraines, my energy has increased, I've maintained my appetite, and I think all the nutrients help with my recovery!
Then of course I did my orientation for the Torture Clinic. Man! I'm scared. They talked about body oder, gas, riding the rollers, oh yeah, and the training. I'll need to watch my nutrition and keep to my schedule, then I'll reap the benefits of being a stronger rider, stronger mentally, fitter, leaner and faster. Having said all that, who cares that it's called "torture".
Races identified for training this year:
Orange County 1/2 Marathon (1/7/07)
Pacific Shoreline 1/2 Marathon (2/4/07)
LA Marathon (3/4/07)
Solvang 50 miler (3/22/07)
Bonielli Park Series Sprint Tri (I think the first is in April)
Newport Beach Sprint Tri (5/07)
Saddleback 1/2 Marathon (5/07)
San Diego International Tri (6/07)
Century ride (ride the bear??)
San Diego Marathon???
1/2 Vineman (7/07)
Another August Race?
Another Century Ride?
Ironman Wisconsin! GOAL!!
This coming week's goal:
Run 4-5 times (Sun, Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri, Sat) - 20-21 mile run included
Torture Clinic 2x's (Tues & Thurs)
I'm a wimp-no swim unless it's warmer (maybe Sunday)
Core Training 2 x's (Thurs & Sunday)
Bike Endurance 1x (Sunday)
Yoga 2x's (Mon & Saturday)
(God! I love the weekends! All about the fun stuff!)

And now for a holiday...
Got home from the trip and pushed through with twisted ankle and all. Must admit, I haven't done much but eat, drink and shop for Christmas.
I did get a 17 miler in last Saturday. Ouch! That hurt! I knew it was going to hurt simply because I had only done 13-14 miler in Saipan. So to jump to mile 18 was asking a lot! My IT Bands certainly "crapped" out on me and I walked the last mile to prevent myself from getting hurt. I felt ok the next day. And even could do my offseason train with 20 Lb weights-no prob.
This weekend I'll do 12 miles, but I'm starting to become a weekend warrior and that scares me.
Need to get back on schedule next week. It might be easy since I can "work from home". So, here is my plan:
Mon-run (Christmas)
Tues- Spin
Wed-swim/run
Thur-run/spin
Fri-Yoga
Sat-18 miler/yoga
Sun-ride/run
I'm taking Reliv and it's supposed to help my migraines and my appetite. So, continue to eat right... no more rich foods (dear god!)
I miss my vacations and ability to put more workouts in!

Home Again!
Just got back into town this morning and after the LONG flight... I'm exhausted. The rest of the trip rocked!
Monday 11/27: I was pretty lazy! No core workout, no swim, but lots of R&R. That night we went on a Sunset Cruise where Mike and I were told by the entertainment that for the night we were "honeymooners". I guess that serves us right for going on a sunset cruise. Anyway, later that night (and after the Buoy Bar) I came down with food poisoning. It was a bad scene for me (Mike just slept on through it all).
Tuesday 11/28: NOTHING but sleep! I think I slept 20 hours in the 24 hour period. Managed to get down bread and water, but couldn't even get out of bed without wiping out my energy.
Wednesday 11/29: After Tuesday, I took it easy. I was holding down food more easily and even managed to take a sailing lesson. At the end of the day, no workouts... but I was impressed that I got some Chinese food in later that night with Russ, Kanae, Angela, Bill, their kids and Mike.
Thursday 11/30: Starting to feel better. Helped Mike with his swimming lesson and did our Core workout.
Friday 12/1: Headed out for Scuba Diving with Russ. Enjoyed some R&R, then went out for one last formal dinner with Russ and Kanae at Seaside grill. Wound up at the Buoy Bar for drinks.
Saturday 12/2: Up early for the "Tank to Tank Duathlon". Awesome race! We swam around the two WWII tanks in the ocean, then transitioned for our run to the Japanese WWII tank on Beach Street. I finished in 55 minutes (couldn't catch the girl in front of me to save my life!). After that, we headed off to a quick breakfast and change of clothes... and went ATV'ing. That was great! Russ's friend gave us a guided tour of the island and even included a stop at a local farmer's lot... after getting attacked by turkeys, and enjoying some fresh coconut juice we moved on. Next on the list, Go Cart racing. Russ easily took first, me second, Kanae third and "Grandpa" Mike took the scenic route. Back to PIC to eat, change, pack and move onto the Hash Harrier's Run.
Wow! The Hash run actually takes more details: We met at the First Bank of Guam parking lot and had about 50 people. Then we were told to head down to Tank Beach. From there after ceremony, etc we headed off after the hares... we ran down to the beach, into the water and "swam/ran" our way along the cliffs, climbed up to the jungle terrain and through amazing landscape (coral, vines, heavy jungle and some people's back lots). Finished back where we started and all agreed it was a pretty cool course. The count: Shannon twisted right ankle, Mike dislocated shoulder, Russ hurt groin, and Kanae twisted both ankles... WE HAD A BLAST! And besides, nothing a little beer couldn't fix. Off to the "religion" and initiated Mike. Since it was their 1150th run, we chowed down on tons of food, tons of alcohol and enjoyed a DJ! With plenty to drink (and drink) we headed on to another party for a quick hello and took Mike home to taxi off to the airport!
Sunday 12/3: It came too quick, but I had to end my travels! I had a blast visiting my family and wished I could spend more time with them. After some minor troubles with the flight home (and a fat swollen ankle) I got home in time to meet my coach for the Core Training session. Now off to bed...
Next Week:
Swim 2x's
Bike 1-2x's
Run 4-5x's (based on ankle)
Yoga 2-3x's
Core 2x's
Back on schedule with my eating habits. Trying something new, Reliv, for my migraines. Overall, feeling stronger and rejuvenated!

Checking in from Saipan
Some like to think of vacation as a time to relax and do nothing. For me, it's a chance to do all the workouts that I normally couldn't do. For two weeks I can live like a professional athlete; get up go for a run, eat breakfast, go for a swim, take a nap and then maybe do another workout, then head down for dinner.
The last week I've been in Saipan visiting my brother. Since landing last Sunday I've had the opportunity to participate in a lot of these activities. I'm mostly proud of the fact that I've actually been able to fit this in between all the eating and drinking we've done! I'll post pictures next week, but here's my log for the week:
Thursday 11/16: Early morning core workout with my coach. Feeling stronger in some aspects but since my core is so weak, my lower back is really suffering. I'm thinking I need to consider seeing a physical therapist to have it checked out, as I think it's affecting my right hip too.
Friday 11/17: Traveled from LAX to Japan (11 hour flight) then "puddle jumper" to another Japanese airport, then off for the 6 hour flight to Saipan. Absolutely NO chance to fit in a workout and what really sucked is the video on the plane didn't work from LAX to Japan, so no movies the entire time. I read an entire 400 page book during the trip. I land at 1am SUNDAY Saipan time and head home with my brother and his wife.
Sunday 11/18: During the trip lost a day. I wake up early morning to go on a 4 mile hike with my sister-in-law and their dog Shelby. Afterwards, I head to church with my brother and then afterwards over to PIC for brunch. He hits up the volleyball courts for a beach volleyball tournament, and I hit the "pool" (ok the 75 degree ocean in front of the resort) to swim the Tagaman Triathlon swim course. Beautiful! I don't think I'll ever have a more amazing view while swimming again! After the tournament, we pick up "Spicy Thai"and hang out at Russ and Kanae's house. My main goal for the day is to stay up until 10pm, Saipan time.
Monday 11/19: Wake up for a run down to Laupau Bay again with Kanae. It's a 3 mile hard run-downhill the way out and ALL uphill on the way back. Once done I head back to PIC where I lounge around reading for awhile. By afternoon I get up to do my core exercises on the grass area on the property. Afterwards I head out for a swim for 20 min. For dinner we eat potluck with Russ and Kanae's Bible study group.
Tuesday 11/20: Mike arrives early this morning. We meet him at PIC and then head out to meet my brother's friend for a swim. This swim is pretty amazing too... the "tank to tank" swim. Basically you swim to two WWII tanks that are in the harbor. It's a pretty difficult swim with the choppy weather, but we have a blast. That night we eat down at the Seaside Gallery and enjoy steak with LOTs of wine. Russ and Kanae join us for a nightcap, then Mike and I close down the Buoy Bar with some swing dancing (to a standing ovation!).
Wednesday 11/21: Wake up and run a 4 mile run from PIC. Afterwards head down to the beach for the "beach clean up" day. After breakfast I hit the Tagaman swim, and then convince Mike to join me for my core workout on the beach. We hang out and relax the rest of the day until it's time to head to Russ and Kanae's house for dinner: Grilled shrimp, salad, and homemade chocolate cookies with some fabulous wine! Great preparation for the brutal Turkey Trot tomorrow!
Thursday (Thanksgiving) 11/22: 5:15am wake up and head down to the start of the race! I'll post pictures later... basically this race is ALL uphill... seriously 4.2 miles up, up, up to Mount Tapachau the highest point in Saipan! It took me 55mins to complete and I got first place in my age group (won a turkey!). Kanae also placed in her age group, while Russ (injured groin) and Mike (not a runner) cheer us on. I'm not kidding they had a hill called "the bitch"! Ate plenty the rest of the day and visited three amazing houses for Thanksgiving. People here are so friendly! It's SO unbelievable how welcoming they are! First to the Mister's house for ""lunch", then to Russ's boss's house for a visit, then lastly to Rex's beautiful house for dinner.
Friday 11/23: I treat this day as my "day off"". Mike and I wake up, go to PIC for breakfast then off with Russ to pick up our Scuba Diving equipment. Originally Russ mentioned not taking us to the Grotto since Mike and I are relatively new to scuba. A last minute change of heart (we'd heard someone almost died at Laulau beach-where he originally intended to take us) and we are loaded up and heading exactly where he said might be too challenging for us. Now, I haven't been scuba diving since 2000 in Sydney... so I'm rusty and the brief refresher class Wednesday didn't really sink in yet. We go to the Grotto and from above Russ gives us instructions on where to stay away from (""the washing machine""), which happens to currently have a man in it! We walk down with our gear on, and suddenly it's as if we have walked upon a horror film. People screaming, kids crying, blood coming from two different people, a Chinesee woman fully dress is soaking wet and missing her flip flop. Basically a tourist fell into the washing machine and some others went in to save her. No one was killed, a few injured and plenty of scared to death folks all clung to the rock. We walk by this as if it's an ""everyday""occurrence. My feet are shaking as I put my flippers on with all the madness. Fast forward a few minutes and we are underwater to a peaceful world. Other than a few problems with the amount of weight I"m carrying on my belt, the dive was amazing! Afterwards we head out for some sight seeing: Last Command Post (with Japanese tanks and machine guns from WWII), Bird Island to hear about some of Russ's Adventure racing mishaps, and to the American Memorial museum to learn more about the Island's history. Off to an Italian restaurant for some lunch (learn of Mike's food habits).... and back to PIC to sleep some. That night we meet up with some of Russ and Kanae's friends (Angela and Bill) for dinner at a "fusion"restaurant" in a house that was converted into a restaurant. Fantastic food!
Saturday 11/24: Up at 4:50am to meet Russ's friend, Nate for a 13 mile run. We started at Last Man''s post and headed up for 1-2 miles (thought I was going to die with the camelback and hills). After going up, we hit a trail run in the jungle. Run past Bird Island, and by Banzi Cliff, past some WWII bunkers, and through the property of the original DHL owner's house (he died in an airplane accident-his second one-and the property was overtaken by the jungle). Finish that run in 2:10... back to PIC for a quick swim on the Tagaman loop to loosen the legs, and off for a hike at Forbidden Island. Here it was a long hike down to some tadpools. We hiked up to a water cave and then after some pics, headed up the hill again. This night we went to ""Len's"" a Japanese restaurant, and enjoyed some great exotic food (really tested Mike). Afterwards we headed to the Hyatt for a night show at the Sandcastle... and that's where Mike finally got his ""cheese"". It was a blast!~
Sunday 11/26: Wake up eat some breakfast and then finally surrender to a nap/relaxation. Meet Russ and Kanae at noon for their friend''s wedding down by the beach front. After eating a ton of food, we wrap things up to get ready for the afternoon Triathlon I planned on doing with the local tri group. I chose the short course since I had ran far the day before, it was raining hard, I was riding Russ's bike and figured the heat would zap me! There were about 10 of us total and it cost $10 to participate. The swim was an out and back to the buoy, I think 500 meters (took me about 9 minutes and I was second out of the water). Off on the bike which allowed me to catch the leader (on a mountain bike and part of the relay)... pretty cool, I've NEVER been the leader of the pack. Trying hard to maintain my lead I knew Stuart the man who won the Turkey Trot the day before was right on my tail... and he was doing the LONG course! He passes me just as I missed the turn on the bike, and I come in to transition "first" for the short course. (Transition is my brother's truck!). Off on the run, my sister-in-law with me, but I was warmed up by now and amped I was in "first" place". I ran the 4k in 19 minutes and took "first"". To celebrate... a warm beer and help baby sit my brother's friend, Tyce, his three kids. Afterwards back to Russ and Kanae's house for leftovers and some Monty Pythons... and home to crash!
(Today) Monday, 11/27: I need to get my core workout in and maybe a swim. Mike and I have decided a massage is necessary (especially since my lower back is tight) and then sunset cruise tonight. A typoon might be coming in, so we are unsure of how that will pan out...
This coming week:
Run 3-4 time (hash run for one)
Tank to tank duathlon (Saturday)
Swim 4 times
Core workout 2 times (one more on Sunday when I get back to the states)
Bike-mountain biking at least once
Eat more
drink more
and continue to enjoy vacation!
Pictures will post later....

Working out in a closet
This Week:
1 day swim, as planned
1 day bike, as planned-one day on the stationary bike in Tucson (not ideal, especially since it was a sit-down stationary bike, but hey, I got it in)
5 days running , as planned (including a 15 transition run and an 8 mile long run)
2 days yoga, as planned (one with studio and one attempt while traveling with stupid DVD)
2 days strength/core training, as planned (did one session by myself in the hotel room)
I'm pretty excited that I stuck with it this week! I was traveling for business to Memphis and Tucson. I am excited because even being out of the state and in the midst of travel chaos, I managed to stick to my planned workout schedule and only missed one day of weight training. Plus, I did a decent job of watching what I ate while traveling (ok, a few moments of weakness).
Monday I made it to swim. I haven't been in awhile so I put myself in the second slowest lane (no real exception there). There were three men in the lane with me, and automatically I was "put" last. By the end of the session, I was leading the lane! If there is one thing I know... it's how to hold back on a long session so you can still have energy on the second half of practice. Needless to say, I gained some respect from the guys. They started telling our coach I was kicking their butts and had to go first.
Monday I also managed to get a 4 mile run after swim. I took it nice and slow being completely aware that my body as recovering from the 10 miler on Saturday.
Tuesday was my "off" day for two reasons. One, it was my scheduled off day/recovery day. Second, I traveled out to Memphis and there was no time.
Wednesday, was another travel day to head to Tucson, but I was able to sneak downstairs to the hotel gym (ok, really it was a closet with a few treadmills, bikes and weights).
Thursday, I went online to check out some local runs (usatf.org) and found one that left from my hotel and ran on University of Arizona's campus. I ran through the student union, through the stadium and around some "no traffic" student trails. 6.3 miles later I treated myself to a coffee and some mango juice. Upstairs to do my Offseason Core/Strength training. Damn that was hard! I had 7 exercises to do, 3 sets of 10 each. It took me about an hour and half to finish and I was sweating HARD! If I had to walk the length of my hotel room again, it would kill me!
Friday, sore from the Offseason Training/hotel room workout... I met a coworker to show him the trail I'd ran the day before. Seriously me legs were dying! We ran a compromised pace for the first loop, then I sent him on his way so I could slow down and get my heartrate to a more reasonable level-especially with doing 8 miles on Saturday. Again, another treat of coffee and strawberry/banana juice, and I was heading out of Tucson.
Saturday, still sore from the Offseason Training, I ran 8 miles with my 9 min/mile group. Finished in 1:15:00. Stretched and chatted it up with the runners, many of which hit a milestone of their own by running the 8. Rush home, shower and head off to my yoga class. Mistakenly told my yoga instructor that I was an offseason triathlete with a weak core... "Because Shannon's an athlete, we are going to push her harder... come one Shannon, hold that pose, you're an athlete..." Note to self, never bring up your a triathlete again to your instructor! At the end of class I told him, "I never said I was a GOOD athlete!"
Still struggling with nutrition and my poor eating habits. Been exhausted lately... most likely due to kicking up my workouts and the travel.
This week:
Swim: 2 days
Offseason Core/Strength Training: 2 days
Run: 4 days
Yoga: 1 day
Bike: 1-2 days
Leave Friday for Saipan! I hope to clock off a long run, a swim and some biking before Sunday.

Patience is a virtue
This week:
10 mile long run
4 days running (including the 10 mile run, equals 21 miles)
3 days of yoga
1 day of strength/core training (NEW!)
1 day of stationary bike (40 minutes)
During my long run on Saturday, my legs felt horrible. I think it's because I'm still recovering (I'm hoping!). I set out to run with my 9 min/mile group and ended up cutting the 12 miler down to 10. I held the group back to more of a 9:30-10 and my heartrate was thru the roof! I know I lost a lot of fitness after being sick. I've just got to remember it's going to take patience to get back to where I was at (in addition to losing 5 lbs).
Today I started a new program that will run 10 weeks. It's a core/strength training program to help strengthen my weak muscles, enhance my performance, and prevent injuries (hello plantar faciatis). I really like it thus far. There are 6 of us total from NOVA and it's so strange how these "easy" exercises cause us to sweat and grunt. All in all, I have a very weak core! Again, patience!
Today I also went down to San Diego for the Challenged Athlete's Foundation race. Amazing! There was a guy who had only one limb and he not only ended up swimming the 1.2 mile swim, but also kicked ass in the 1/2 marathon. What an inspiration! Plus, saw Bob Babbit... a good day!
Next Week:
1 day swim (due to travel and my "Gourmet Group" this is all I can get in)
1 day bike (again due to travel)
4-5 days running
2 days yoga (due to travel gonna use the DVDs I bought)
2 days strength/core training
1 day weight training
Feeling better emotionally. Truthfully, the only thing I want to do is stay inside and recollect. I'm a hermit. Totally fine with this but need to make sure it doesn't become too comfortable. With this new program I'm meeting new people, plus I plan to join (yes, pay money for...) the Torture Clinic in Saddleback. Maybe I'll meet some more people there.
2 week goal:
lose 3-4 lbs
Feel stronger and healthier

The physical and emotional
Daylight savings time. A chance to get back on the early morning wagon. And now that I'm feeling better (thanks antibiotics) I plan to get back out there for the 5:45am swim class.
Today went to two clinics: one put on by OCTC, the other, by NOVA. The NOVA one had me interested in joining a program to get my core in shape. It's be twice a week for three months. Only problem is my work schedule and my vacation. I'll sit on that until I figure out what to do.
This week was able to pull off 1 spin class and 1 "long" run. I am antsy from not being able to hold a rhythm. But that's in hindsight... I'm trying to move forward, knowing it takes time... and I have time before Wisconsin.
This coming week's schedule:
2-3 days swim
2 days of bike
4-5 days of run, one 12 mile run
2-3 days of yoga
2 days of weights
run with Snails Pace on Wed
On another more personal note...what's my problem this week?
A year ago my ex told me we needed to take a break from each other. He told me I had issues to work out and that I should see a therapist. He told me that because he thought I was jealous all the time. What he never seemed to see/understand is the actions he chose never allowed me to feel secure in our relationship. He constantly needed female attention and it needed to come from everywhere... his work, his family, our friends. It was always his goal to be the charmer, the one to grab the interest of the all the women in the room. And on top of that, he would do it in a way that neglected me. I always felt his desire for attention far outweighed my needs. If ever I talked with him about it, I was instantly a bad guy. I tried many approaches... asking to be involved to understand his need, supporting him at times to go on "girl's night out" without me, and simply being straight forward. What the therapist said a year ago is that the only problem I had was accepting all the blame in the relationship. He said since I was never jealous with previous boyfriends, that Doug's actions were something outside of my familiarity. His selfishness prevented him from listening to me. Anyway, I know this has nothing to do with my training, but this week was a depressing week for me. It consumed my thoughts and brought me down. And that always affects your motivation, eating patterns, and energy. Not only do you feel weak physically some weeks but also emotionally. Enough of this crap...
Looking forward to a good week!

Down, down, down...
That's what has happened to me this week. My "common cold" took me down!
In an effort to get better, I skipped my swim class, and didn't run. Man! Not doing anything is making me crazy with boredom! I'm sure my legs are fresh and recovered, and I can't wait to get back into the swing of things. I even thought this morning I could do the "coffee ride" with my friends followed up with swim, but again the clogged up lungs had other things in mind.
Running and working out allows me to relieve stress. It's "me time". I get a chance to work things out in my head (picture Mission Impossible-the first one-when Tom Cruise had that electric board and he organized images visually with the use of his hands to solve the case). I feel sexier and happier.
Next week I'm in LA for work. That means "hurrying up and waiting", being tempted by a tub (yes, a tub) of M&Ms, and long hours while we photograph food. But I'm still planning on getting back on track and I understand the hotel we are staying at not only has a gym but a pool. Armed with my swim schedule and determination... I hope to succeed!
Finished my schedule for the Ironman. After working it out, I actually didn't feel as overwhelmed as I did the first round! Amazing. I need to focus on base training until March 12th. The magic date that kicks off six months of training. Next up, figuring out "life" and how that might affect my training. Time to start working around things.
Kona was this weekend! Congrats to the participants! Hope to pull some inspiration from you all!
